MEDICAL EXAMINATION; (June 13th 8 a.m.); - This examination was

simply a Farce from beginning to end. Passengers were rejected for

"Trachoma" who showed not the slightest traces of such disease and whose

eyes were absolutely normal. Amongst others, about eighteen were rejected because their temperatures were 1 or 2 degrees above normal (these

hed been under the sun the whole of the previous day).

I was asked by the Port Doctor to treat these cases, as they would

be re-examined and passed on the following day. I did so, and all were

uite normal on the next morning.

The Fort Doctor voluntarily promised several times, that all

rejected passengers would be re-examined and he thought (he said) that

any of the cases would be passed.

We waited day after day, had the passengers mustered each

morning, but no port doctor has ever appeared to re-examine the ship's

passengers.

Every statement made by the Port Doctor to the Captain and Self

has been incorrect and every promise has been broken.

I wish here again to protest against the refined cruelty which

keeps unfortunate passengers waiting expectantly day after day for a

re-examination.

All the first and second class and about half the Deck passengers

were passed on the 13th June, On June 24th about 135 of the latter were

sent beck to the ship from the Quarantine Station on shore.

Thus 135 passengers who had been 41 days on the ship and were

passed as free from Trachoma on June 13th were sent back eleven days

afterwards with Trachoma. If they had Trachoma where did they get it?

HEALTH IN PORT FROM JUNE 14TH TO DATE:- Health of passengers

remained very good for the first four weeks after arrival. Then we had

our first case of Beri-beri. To date we had 10 cases and four deaths.

These deaths were entirely preventible. If the majority of our
